What is design?
These days I hear that word get dropped more than soap — yes, I did. To the point that I always have to clarify whenever the word comes up. I would love to tell you that I have discovered what design is and I am here to share my findings — but I definitely do not have the credentials nor the audacity to pretend that I would be capable of ascertaining such a feat.I will on the other hand present an observation.
Being a child of the 80’s I have had the privilege of observing many game changers, as it relates to pop culture, including (but not limited to): Terminator 1 and 2, RoboCop, Tim Burton’s Batman, Pumps, Jordan’s, Thriller, Family Matters, Full House, In Living Color, the best cartoons known to man, Atari, NES, Sega, Turbo Grafix 16, Neo Geo, Street Fighter, Mortal Combat, Bulletproof Gameboy, Kool-Aid, Tang, etcetera.
I digress. What is Design? People keep telling me that a picture is worth a thousand words — so I drew one.

I could argue that the circa 80’s Motorola is a better phone than the 2k Apple iPhone. Kool-Aid drinkers, I am not hating just wait for the punch line.
It is obvious that design cannot be restricted by the physical features of the object, device or content. When you buy an iPhone you buy into Apple’s family of products and services. When you buy an iPhone you buy into iTunes, Genius Bar, iCal, Apple Care, Apple Store, App Store, and every other service that Apple offers to make your digital life seamless, effortless and enjoyable.
Great design has transcended to a great experience.
Starbucks creates a great environment for their coffee. Coca Cola delivers happiness in a can. BMW says they deliver Joy. Pepsi is Refreshing the way you think about carbonated drinks.
Go down the list of Brands in your life. If in the last year or two they haven’t changed their slogan to a derivative of “bla bla an emotion” then they will in the next couple of years. (If they don’t check out how they are doing fiscally).
What does design mean to you? When have you overlooked physical discomforts for an emotional/psychological boost?
