Traditional Advertising, What’s That?
When thinking of Marketing and Advertising in today’s culture you often hear “Digital” thrown around a lot. What about traditional advertising?
We are forgetting, more and more, what the basics are, and in many cases rightfully so. I was in an intense strategy meeting for a new client yesterday and we re-trained ourselvs on the importance of traditional as well as digital advertising. Some corporations have spent millions of dollars on researching why a billboard works, others spent the money on researching print Ads. How do you know which to use?
I’ve been reading through “Ogilvy on Advertising” and he says that his secret weapon through out all of these years, helping to make Ogilvy and Mathers one of the largest and most successful in the world, is direct advertising (door-to-door). He would suggest postcards that are sent to surrounding areas. The idea behind this is that you are making sure that more people are seeing your Ad by putting it in their hands. Something I would add is make sure you offer something free. In 1904 JELLO sent free cookbooks to house wives, and most of the recipes used jello in some way or another. It resulted in JELLO becoming “America’s Most Famous Desert”.
Vujà Dé Studios is most definitely a 2.0 creative firm, but it is always good to remember tradition. Digital is still in many ways just an infant, we are going to be seeing it change and evolve to accommodate the current culture trends. I love that about digital, its almost limitless. Maybe, just maybe digital can remember its roots and adapt some of the same ideas, minus spam email because no one likes spam.
